A bowl, before the glaze
Notes on the small decisions that happen while a form is still on the wheel.
Before there is a colour to think about, there is the shape. I spend time with the rim: how open it feels, how it meets the wall, and whether the bowl looks settled on its foot.
Working on the wheel gives me a way to make one decision at a time. A small change near the top can alter the whole silhouette. Sometimes the most useful move is to stop and look at the piece from the side.
I make objects for everyday use, so I think about them away from the studio too. A bowl has to make sense in a hand and on a table, alongside the ordinary things already there.
These are the observations I want to keep in this journal. Not a set of rules for making the perfect pot, but a place to notice what each piece asks me to try next.
